Port Description

Oporto (Porto), Portugal

Steep, vine-covered hills flank this medieval city, which is situated on the banks of the River Douro, near Portugal’s stunning and serene Costa Verde. Five dramatic bridges cross the river to connect Oporto with Vila Nova de Gaia, the port wine capital of the world. More than 50 winemaking companies call this region home, many of which offer tours and tasting. Close encounters of the grape kind dominate the agendas of many a visitor, but the twisted streets of the Ribeira waterfront district and the gold-encrusted baroque interior of São Francisco Church are also worth a look.
